Today was cold. The gear has been adapted, gloves are required, two layers are worn for the downhill ride home. Long socks. I've already got my bus pass. This is the end of biking to work.
I'm going to miss the independence of leaving whenever I want, never waiting for anything but traffic lights, and having a travel time under my control. There's also the simple pleasure in biking; in the feeling of self-powered movement and the efficient use of energy, in seeing the city at a digestible speed, experiencing the topography of the neighbourhoods in their changing colours and smells, a front garden planted with asters, a fall of leaves.
Still, the evenings are coming earlier and there's rain, not wanting to be soaked and coated in grit, and not wanting to invest heavily in the necessary gear, I'm climbing back onto public transit. Time to settle into a winter of cramped buses, cold drizzle, and inactivity. On the bright side, maybe I can gain back some of that weight.

I guess it's official. I just got a letter in the mail from the government. I've been in this apartment a whole year. Technically, I didn't move in until October, but if the dust buildup on the ceiling lights is any indication, I've been here a while. There's still stuff I need to do... better get on with it.
I'm also taking another continuing ed course from the art school, this time in a graphics layout program I under-utilize. It's the first time since high school I've done any formal training in design, despite working in it for the last seven years or so. Our instructor was showing some student work and listing off the various courses you could take to learn the fundamentals of type, layout, and all the little things I never bothered doing. I'm sure someone suspected it all along; I'm a total fraud.
