Since the thaw, the plants on the deck look like they’ve been put through a clothes ringer (what? you don’t have one?). The nasturtiums, one of the more tender plants, look like a visual definition of the word “flaccid”. Surprisingly the die-off has revealed that the strawberry plant is alive and well. New shoots from accidentally-seeded sweet peas are also up. I need to get out there and clean things up, cut off last year’s growth, etc. One more thing on the ‘to do’ list.

Last week I walked up the three stairs (not three flights, just three stairs) in the hallway and something twanged in my right thigh, whatever muscle is right in the middle of the back and feels like it short-circuited your femur. I hobbled to the elevator instead of my usual stairwell and rode it to the lobby.
I was limping on my way out the building, and managed a sedate walk to the closest bus stop. Despite the huge line of people there, I didn’t detour to the more robust bus route five blocks away.
The leg was alright on my walk in to work, I could feel it, but it wasn’t painful. At work I had to resist my usual habit of taking the stairs two at a time. I was doing pretty well until the end of the day when I was headed back to the bus and accelerated to my normal cruising speed. It twanged again. I slowed to a crawl. People passed me. My ability to dodge moving vehicles, though seldom employed, was sorely missed. I was heading to the further bus loop with the express buses, but seeing someone I knew at the closer slow bus loop was enough of an excuse to stop walking.
I did some stretches at home, but I don’t even know what to stretch to get at it. Sucks to be old.
