So I bought an apartment. Spent last Saturday cleaning. The fridge took up an inordinate amount of time. I figured it would be one of the only times it would be completely empty, and if I cleaned it, I could leave it full of baking soda for a good few days before putting food in there. I succumbed to the marketing hype around little blocks of melamine foam withn touted supernatural abilities. I had them on my shopping list, crossed them off of it in a moment of independent thought, then saw them in the store and bought them anyway. The surface had that fridge-texture (what do you call that? Somewhat-smooth-surface-but-with-pits-like-nematodes-have-been-making-snow-angels?) embedded with gray residue. I had a microfibre cloth which didn't do much for it. I then did a swipe with a slightly-moistened melamine sponge and I got that impossibly-clean-swath-in-the-middle-of-grime visual you've only seen on commercials. I think I just found a new weapon in the fight against other people's dirt.

When putting together a portfolio:
Artistic license is a broad and beautiful thing, but I want to see that you know how to do something straightforward. If you're showing a photograph, I don't care how many Photoshop filters you know how to apply, I want to know that you can take a photo with the correct exposure, colour balance, and focus. If you're showing me illustration, I don't care if you're really into stylized naiveté, I want to see correct proportions, a range of tones, and realistic detail. This isn't to say you can't have any departures from harsh realism, just show me one and then you can run around barefoot throwing flowers in the air as much as you want.
Give away some milk. There are a lot of people and organizations out there that could use design (whether or not they know it). If you're a new designer looking for professional experience, go find a good cause and do some design pro bono; a logo, a business card, a poster, a small web presence, anything. If this ends up being for someone you're related to, that's fine, just be up front about it. You get professional experience, they get some design, and I figure you know how to work with clients and deliver projects. I just might buy that cow.
