![]() We did our third annual Darwin Birthday Cake competition at work. This time was the most public, and we had more public participation; really impressive entries this year. The first time around one of the professors I asked to judge made certificates giving entries the recognition of being "Most Artistic", "Best Tasting", etc. I had provided the top three prizes, but the certificates ensured everyone walked away with something, and allowed for a bit of fun. I kept it up last year, designing branded certificiates, and this year I spent about five minutes modifying the print file to change the date and printed out a new batch. Our judges distributed the awards including one for "Best Theory", previously awarded to a cake that contained (within hollow chocolate eggs) variable recipes to make the cake, thereby providing descent with modification, or the building blocks for evolution itself. This year "Best Theory" went to a kid's submission called "The Big Bang Theory," which looked as chaotic as the event after which it was named. The baker, who had been anxiously waiting, jumped up and down, hugged his mom, and was generally ecstatic; which may have been the best return on investment for any piece of design I've ever done. Pictures here.
