Last time I was at Niagara was fifteen years ago, and it’s pretty much the same as I remember it. The tourist part of town remains a cartoon jumble of arcades, rides, wax museums, and theme restaurants (1). I think the ploy is to barrage you with western commercial excess to make it seem so much calmer and refreshingly natural when you see the falls (2). It was a hot day and the crowds were gathering on the walkway (3). We took the Maid of the Mist boat tour, which none of us had done before (4). Though you may not get as close to the falls as the “Behind the Falls” tour (5), you still get to wear those nifty blue raincoats (6). The boats stop by the American side for a casual gander (7), then plunge you into the churning waters and drenching spray of the Horseshoe Falls (8). We got wet (9), but all in good fun.
Afterward, we walked the promenade with all the other visitors, taking in the view (10), and eating frozen yogurt (11). More boats pushed into the rainbow mists (12), more water thundered over the edge (13), and some guy’s stash of large bills all blew away down the sidewalk. We, being honest Canadians all around, returned it to the grateful man. A quick refuel on junk food (fine, I had junk food, Geoff and Tree had salads or something), and we were back on the road.
