We left the ship in the early morning, driving from the port through the suburbs, past industrial lands, beaches, and a few of the 2004 Olympic venues (1). We arrived at the airport, where we got to stand in the line from Hades (2), learning that our flight would be delayed two hours to 4PM. We contacted Geoff to let him know, using the painfully slow, but free internet terminal with the faulty trackball. We ate, shopped, and wandered the corridors (4) during our six-hour wait before being herded into the lounge (3). Tree and I had lost our ability to think, and numbly stood in whatever line was in front of us.
Eventually we boarded a smaller plane (5), which would therefore have to stop in Scotland to refuel. We left Athens at 4:40PM, and it was past 9PM (continental time) when we arrived in Glasgow (6). They opened the rear door, giving us a view of the airport, and a few church steeples (7). We walked around and shared our photos with Lisa and Erika (8). The highlight of the hour-long visit was when the airport guy came to close the door (9). Look a Glaswegian! Over six hours later we arrived in Montréal, where we were informed that we would now have to switch planes. They hooked up a giant vehicle to the back doors (10) and were transferred directly to a new plane (11). It was another hour before we took off and another hour to Toronto. We were met by Geoff at Pearson International after 12:30AM EDT, or 7:30AM in Athens, about 24 hours from when we had left the ship. Geoff drove us to his Aunt’s in Richmond Hill for food, showers, and the first decent night’s rest in a long time. < previous | index | next > |
