We boarded our cruise ship, the Ocean Monarch (1), about mid-morning, and set sail. Our first few hours on board were occupied with orientation talks and exploring the pool deck (2) and the rest of the ship. It was an older vessel; smaller than some, but perfectly comfortable.
In the early evening we arrived at the island of Mykonos (3). It is described as the most “jet-set” of the islands, and I suppose the disjuncture of having traditional blue and white Cycladic houses containing stores for Lacoste and Cartier evidences this. Despite this, the port city is large enough to be able to wander away from the throngs and get lost in empty twisting alleyways (5) roofed by bougainvillea and a clear blue sky (4). We also visited Lena’s House, a museum preserving the interior of a typical 19th century dwelling (6). Back out on the streets, restaurants were displaying their goods outside, whether fresh fish, or sun-dried octopus (7). The tavernas around Little Venice were surely not lacking patrons (8). A row of windmills stands at this end of the town (9), where many gathered along the water to watch the sun sink into the Aegean (10). Our brief time was almost up, so we wound our way back through the glowing city (11), and sailed into the night. < previous | index | next > |
