Tortula muralis

A leaf of Tortula muralis, showing the papillae (the bumps). The papillae are very dense on the upper surface of the leaf, but more widely spaced on the underside, which can be seen curling in a bit on the upper left. The papillae are made of extra-thick deposits of cuticle, a waxy substance on the surface of leaves that helps prevent water loss.
