Sphagnum rubellum

This detail of the hyaline cells reveals the fibrils, or cell wall thickenings that make the cells strong. They keep them from bursting when they are full, or collapsing when they are empty. Identifying different species of Sphagnum is difficult, and characters like the number and position of pores are used to tell them apart.
