Pellia neesiana

Pellia neesiana, commonly known as ring pellia, is usually a dark to rich green and is somewhat translucent and wavy at the borders of the thallus. It is usually branched and 4-8 mm wide. The thallus, although quite thin, is composed of several cell layers (figure 2).

Ring pellia is common along the coast of British Columbia and grows on moist soil, and in swampy areas as well. The sample shown in figure 1 was found completely submerged in water growing beside a stand of Sphagnum!
